Background
The Xotic XXP-1 is a multifunction expression pedal designed for modern pedalboards, digital rigs, modelers, MIDI controllers, and effects with expression inputs.
Rather than providing just a single expression treadle, the XXP-1 combines three separate control functions in one compact aluminum enclosure: a conventional expression treadle, a toe-position momentary switch, and Xotic's unique heel-operated expression control.
This allows multiple parameters or functions to be controlled from a single pedal footprint. Depending on the connected equipment, the XXP-1 can control parameters such as volume, wah, pitch, delay time, modulation depth, effect mix, gain, or virtually any other function that accepts an external expression controller.
Internal DIP switches provide compatibility with both TRS and TS expression configurations, while Xotic's internal quick-connect wiring allows the control functions to be reassigned to different output jack positions without soldering.
Three Control Functions
The XXP-1 provides three different ways to control compatible equipment from a single pedal.
EXP1 — Main Expression Treadle
The main treadle provides the traditional expression-pedal function, using a 20K potentiometer and a wide mechanical sweep for smooth, continuous parameter control.
Depending on the equipment connected to the XXP-1, EXP1 can be assigned to volume, wah, pitch, effect mix, delay parameters, modulation, or any other continuously variable function supported by the connected device.
Xotic uses a plastic-conductive potentiometer for the main treadle, selected for smooth operation, reliability, and long-term durability.
EXP2 — Toe Switch
EXP2 adds a momentary TS footswitch at the toe position of the treadle. Pressing down at the front of the pedal activates the switch without requiring the player to move to a separate footswitch.
The exact function depends on the device being controlled. On compatible equipment, it can be used for functions such as activating or bypassing an effect, engaging wah mode, changing a parameter state, or triggering another function assigned to a momentary external switch.
EXP3 — Heel Control
EXP3 is Xotic's distinctive heel-operated expression control. A separate 20K potentiometer is adjusted using a control knob positioned at the rear of the pedal, allowing a second continuous parameter to be adjusted with the player's heel.
This makes it possible to control one parameter with the main treadle while simultaneously having access to another adjustable parameter without reaching down to the pedalboard.
The heel knob incorporates a rubber O-ring underneath it, allowing the resistance of the control to be adjusted according to how much pressure is applied when the knob is installed. This helps prevent accidental movement while still allowing intentional adjustments with the foot.
Flexible TRS & TS Compatibility
Expression-pedal connections are not standardized across all manufacturers. Some equipment uses a TRS expression connection, while other devices use a TS configuration.
The XXP-1 addresses this with internal DIP switches that allow the expression outputs to be configured for either TRS or TS operation.
With the rubber feet removed, the bottom of the pedal can be opened to access the internal settings. Each DIP switch corresponds to an output position: On selects TRS mode, while Off selects TS mode.
This allows the XXP-1 to work with a wider variety of pedals, modelers, amp simulators, MIDI controllers, and other expression-compatible equipment without requiring modification to the pedal.
Always check the expression-input specifications of the device you are connecting to the XXP-1 and select the appropriate TS or TRS configuration.
Reconfigurable Outputs
The XXP-1 uses an internal quick-connect wiring system that allows its control functions to be routed to the desired output jack locations without soldering.
This means the physical output arrangement can be customized to suit the player's pedalboard layout or connected equipment rather than requiring a fixed jack configuration.
Three physical output jacks are provided. The internal wiring harness can be carefully disconnected and reconnected to assign the desired function to the preferred jack position.
Expression Pedal vs. Volume Pedal
The XXP-1 is an expression controller, not a conventional in-line audio volume pedal such as the Xotic XVP-250K or XVP-25K.
A traditional volume pedal receives the guitar's audio signal and directly changes its level. The XXP-1 instead connects to the expression or control input of another compatible device and remotely changes a parameter inside that device.
For example, when connected to a modeler or effects processor, the XXP-1's main treadle can be assigned to the processor's volume parameter and function like a volume pedal. The same treadle could instead be assigned to wah, pitch, delay mix, modulation depth, or another parameter without rerouting the guitar's audio signal.
This makes the XXP-1 particularly useful for digital and programmable rigs where the same physical pedal may perform different functions depending on the selected preset.
Ideal for Modern Rigs
Digital Modelers & Amp Simulators — Use the XXP-1 to control assignable parameters such as volume, wah, pitch, gain, effect mix, or modulation within a compatible modeling system.
Multi-Effects Processors — Multiple control functions make the XXP-1 particularly useful with processors capable of assigning different parameters to external expression and switch inputs.

Treadle & Construction
XVP-Derived Pedal Mechanism — The XXP-1 inherits its treadle mechanism from Xotic's XVP volume-pedal series, providing a familiar, smooth operating feel.
Nylon Pivot System — The treadle uses Xotic's nylon pivot design for smooth mechanical operation and long-term durability.
Adjustable Treadle Torque — The resistance of the main pedal can be adjusted using the external pivot nut. Tightening or loosening the mechanism allows the treadle to be set anywhere from relatively loose and fast to firmer and more controlled.
Aluminum Chassis — The lightweight aluminum enclosure provides a rigid and durable platform while keeping overall weight to approximately two pounds.
