Background

The Xotic XVP Series combines a smooth, expressive volume-pedal response with a compact footprint and durable, stringless mechanical design. Available in both 250K high-impedance and 25K low-impedance versions, the two models are designed for different locations within an instrument signal chain.

The Xotic XVP-25K Volume Pedal is the low-impedance version, designed for active instruments, buffered signals, and amplifier effects loops.

Built around a high-quality 25K audio potentiometer, the XVP-25K provides a smooth, natural volume sweep when working with low-impedance signal sources.

Its compact footprint makes it well suited to modern pedalboards, while the heavy-duty aluminum enclosure and stringless mechanical design are built for reliable stage and studio use.

XVP-25K vs. XVP-250K

The XVP-25K and XVP-250K share the same basic enclosure, treadle design, rack-and-pinion mechanism, tuner output, and overall construction. The primary difference is the value of the internal potentiometer and the type of signal each version is designed to work with.

XVP-25K — Low Impedance: Designed for active instruments, buffered signals, and low-impedance locations within the signal chain. It is also the preferred version for use in many amplifier effects loops.

XVP-250K — High Impedance: Designed primarily for passive electric guitars and basses. This is generally the correct version when connecting a conventional passive instrument directly to the volume pedal near the beginning of the signal chain.

Which version should I choose? If your instrument has active electronics, the signal feeding the volume pedal is buffered, or you plan to place the pedal in an amplifier effects loop, choose the XVP-25K. If you are connecting a conventional passive guitar or bass directly to the volume pedal, the XVP-250K is normally the appropriate choice.

Designed for Active & Low-Impedance Signals

The 25K low-impedance design is intended for use after an active or buffered signal rather than directly after conventional passive guitar pickups.

This makes the XVP-25K an excellent choice for guitars and basses with active electronics, as well as for low-impedance signals created by buffers and other active equipment.

It is also particularly useful in an amplifier effects loop, where the amplifier's effects send normally provides a low-impedance signal.

Effects Loop Placement

When using the XVP-25K in an amplifier effects loop, connect the amplifier's Effects Send to the input of the volume pedal, then connect the XVP-25K's output to the amplifier's Effects Return.

This placement allows the pedal to control the signal after the amplifier's preamp section. As a result, overall volume can be adjusted without reducing the signal level being sent into the preamp.

This is particularly useful with an amplifier that generates overdrive or distortion in its preamp section. Reducing the XVP-25K in the effects loop can lower the overall output level while allowing the preamp to retain essentially the same gain structure and distortion character.

Smooth, Stringless Mechanism

Instead of the cord or string mechanism found in many traditional volume pedals, the XVP uses a rack-and-pinion system with a nylon pivot bushing.

The mechanism provides a long, smooth, natural-feeling sweep while eliminating the string that can stretch, slip, or eventually break in conventional designs.

This direct mechanical system is designed for durability and consistent response through repeated stage and studio use.

Connections

Input — Accepts a low-impedance signal from an active instrument, buffered signal source, or amplifier effects-loop send.

Output — Sends the volume-controlled signal to the next device in the signal chain or to an amplifier's effects-loop return.

Tuner Out — Provides a dedicated output for connecting an electronic tuner, keeping the tuner conveniently available without requiring it to occupy the main signal path.

Construction

25K Audio Potentiometer — A high-quality low-impedance audio-taper potentiometer provides a gradual, musical response suitable for active and buffered signals.

100% Hand-Wired — The internal signal connections are hand-wired using cloth-covered wire.

Rack-and-Pinion Drive — The stringless mechanical system transfers treadle movement directly to the potentiometer for smooth and reliable operation.

Nylon Pivot Bushing — Helps provide smooth treadle movement while contributing to the durability of the mechanical assembly.

Aluminum Enclosure — The durable die-cast aluminum housing is designed for regular pedalboard, stage, and studio use.

Compact Footprint — At approximately two-thirds the size of many conventional volume pedals, the XVP offers a substantial treadle and natural sweep while taking up less pedalboard space.

Features

Low-Impedance 25K Design — Optimized for active instruments, buffered signals, and amplifier effects loops.

Effects-Loop Friendly — Allows overall level to be controlled after an amplifier's preamp section without reducing the signal driving the preamp.

Smooth Volume Sweep — Designed for precise level control, expressive volume swells, and gradual fades.

High-Quality Audio Potentiometer — Selected to maintain a natural response throughout the pedal's travel.

Stringless Construction — Rack-and-pinion operation eliminates the breakable cord used by many conventional volume-pedal designs.

Hand-Wired Signal Path — Internally wired by hand with cloth-covered wire.

Dedicated Tuner Output — Allows convenient connection of a tuner separate from the main output.

Compact, Durable Enclosure — Provides a substantial treadle and smooth sweep while remaining pedalboard friendly.
