Background

The Xotic XVP Series combines a smooth, expressive volume-pedal response with a compact footprint and durable, stringless mechanical design. Available in both 250K high-impedance and 25K low-impedance versions, the two models are designed for different locations within an instrument signal chain.

The Xotic XVP-250K Volume Pedal is the high-impedance version, designed specifically for guitars and other instruments with passive electronics.

Built around a high-quality 250K audio potentiometer, the XVP-250K provides a smooth, natural volume sweep while helping preserve the instrument's frequency response and tonal character throughout the pedal's range.

Its compact footprint makes it well suited to modern pedalboards where space is at a premium, while the heavy-duty aluminum enclosure and stringless mechanical design are built for long-term stage and studio use.

XVP-250K vs. XVP-25K

The XVP-250K and XVP-25K share the same basic enclosure, treadle design, rack-and-pinion mechanism, tuner output, and overall construction. The primary difference is the value of the internal potentiometer and the type of signal each version is designed to work with.

XVP-250K — High Impedance: Designed primarily for passive electric guitars and basses. This is generally the correct version when connecting a conventional passive instrument directly to the volume pedal.

XVP-25K — Low Impedance: Designed for active instruments and low-impedance or buffered signals. It is also the preferred version for use in many amplifier effects loops.

Which version should I choose? If your guitar or bass uses conventional passive pickups and the volume pedal will be placed near the beginning of your pedalboard, choose the XVP-250K. If your instrument has active electronics, or you plan to use the volume pedal in an amplifier effects loop, the XVP-25K is normally the appropriate choice.

Designed for Passive Instruments

The 250K high-impedance design is optimized for passive guitars and basses, making it the appropriate Xotic volume pedal for most traditional electric guitars equipped with passive pickups.

In a conventional guitar setup, the XVP-250K can be placed near the beginning of the signal chain, allowing the pedal to control the instrument's level before the signal reaches the rest of the effects chain.

This placement allows the volume pedal to interact naturally with gain-sensitive pedals and amplifiers. Reducing the pedal can lower both overall volume and the amount of signal driving downstream overdrive or distortion circuits, similar to using the instrument's own volume control.

Smooth, Stringless Mechanism

Instead of using the cord or string mechanism found in many traditional volume pedals, the XVP uses a rack-and-pinion system with a nylon pivot bushing.

This design provides a long, smooth, natural-feeling sweep while eliminating the string that can stretch, slip, or eventually break in conventional volume-pedal mechanisms.

The result is a simple and durable mechanical system designed to provide consistent operation through repeated stage and studio use.

Connections

Input — Connect your passive guitar, bass, or other instrument to the input of the XVP-250K.

Output — Sends the volume-controlled signal to your effects pedals, amplifier, or other equipment in the signal chain.

Tuner Out — Provides a dedicated output for connecting an electronic tuner, keeping the tuner conveniently available without requiring it to occupy the main signal path.

Construction

250K Audio Potentiometer — A high-quality audio-taper potentiometer provides the gradual, musical response required for controlled volume changes and smooth swells.

100% Hand-Wired — The internal signal connections are hand-wired using cloth-covered wire.

Rack-and-Pinion Drive — The stringless mechanical system transfers treadle movement directly to the potentiometer for smooth and reliable operation.

Nylon Pivot Bushing — Helps provide a smooth treadle action while contributing to the durability of the mechanical assembly.

Aluminum Enclosure — The durable die-cast aluminum housing is designed for regular pedalboard, stage, and studio use.

Compact Footprint — At approximately two-thirds the size of many conventional volume pedals, the XVP provides a substantial treadle and natural sweep without consuming excessive pedalboard space.

Features

High-Impedance 250K Design — Optimized for instruments with passive electronics.

Smooth Volume Sweep — Designed for precise level control, expressive volume swells, and gradual fades.

High-Quality Audio Potentiometer — Selected to maintain a natural frequency response throughout the pedal's travel.

Stringless Construction — Rack-and-pinion operation eliminates the breakable cord used by many traditional volume pedals.

Hand-Wired Signal Path — Internally wired by hand with cloth-covered wire.

Dedicated Tuner Output — Allows convenient connection of a tuner separate from the primary output.

Compact, Durable Enclosure — Provides a substantial treadle and smooth sweep while remaining pedalboard friendly.
